Is a Partial Hip Replacement the Best Option for You?

A partial hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which only the ball portion of the hip joint, which is formed by the upper end of the thigh bone, is replaced by an artificial prosthesis. The patient retains their natural hip socket in the lower part of the pelvic bone. Let’s look at conditions where a partial hip replacement may be the best option for you.

Partial hip replacement is not indicated for someone who has osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis as these conditions generally affect both the ball and socket portions of the hip joint. A suitable candidate for this procedure is usually a patient who has a traumatic fall and has sustained a fracture of the upper part of the thigh bone in the femoral head or neck region. Partial hip replacement is a less invasive procedure than a total hip replacement and this may help the hip fracture heal better.

Partial hip replacements are not commonly performed as the artificial ball over time can wear down the cartilage within the hip socket causing discomfort and limiting hip mobility. So, this option may be suitable for elderly patients that have hip fractures and may not be ideal candidates for the more invasive total hip replacement surgery.

For younger and more active individuals that have end-stage arthritis or a degenerative hip condition, a total hip replacement may be a better option as it provides better range of motion and function to support an active lifestyle.
